![]() In 1690 Richard Simon mistakenly identified Shem-Tob’s Matthew with the versions of Münster and du Tillet. This is not to be confused with the Sebastian Münster (1537 dedicated to Henry VIII under title “The Torah of the Messiah” or Jean du Tillet (1555) versions of Hebrew Matthew. ![]() This fascinating text, which I will refer to as Shem-Tov (ST), completed in 1380 CE was revised in 1385 & 1400. The 12th/ 13th book contains a Hebrew version of the complete text of Matthew. These manuscripts can be found in various places around the world including museums, libraries and private collections.In this 2006 lecture I explore some of the rather remarkable textual readings of the 14th century polemical treatise Even Bochan written by Shem-Tob ben-Isaac ben-Shaprut Ibn Shaprut, a Castilian Jewish physician, living later in Aragon. Add to this over 24,000 copies of versions, or translations, of Scripture are still in existence. In addition, over 5,500 Greek manuscripts still exist. For example, thousands of Hebrew manuscripts of the Old Testament are in existence today. There are many thousands of manuscripts that still exist which contain part of the biblical text. This gives a small sampling of some of the places where the one can find where the various biblical manuscripts are housed. Under each fragment, the place where it is housed today is listed in this helpful reference work. However, the Greek has not been translated into English. The work of Kurt and Barbara Aland, The Text of the New Testament, translated by Errol F. Previously, editors included Eberhard Nestle his son Erwin Nestle and Kurt Aland. Currently, Barbara Aland is also the editor of this volume. They differ in the way the text is punctuated as well as their listing of the textual notes. This edition of the New Testament contains the same text as the one printed by the United Bible Society. There are certain reference works that list where the major manuscripts of the Bible are kept. Indeed, thousands of Old Testament manuscripts survive, while upwards of thirty thousand New Testament manuscripts are known to exist.
