And my wife liked the way they looked better.įirst dynamics is mentioned on Benchmark’s site, they mask the bad side of this with glossing it as a positive in ultra low noise and accuracy. I’m a vocal fan and they were a bit warmer/fuller sounding on the LS50’s with that amp. At the time the LS50’s matched better with an amp I already had. With the LS50’s not sure I didn’t make a mistake, wound up, upgrading to the tunetot. I’ll look into it tomorrow and find a few links. It’s something about using AB power without its crossover restrictions by using class D’s efficient set up. Love how Benchmark throws a positive spin on everything.Ĭlass D I’d have to look at the site that describe the differences between a standard class AB amp and a class H amp. The dynamic range of the AHB2 is 132 dB, making it 10 to 30 dB quieter than some of the very best reference-quality power amplifiers. Benchmark’s backhanded way of trying to say quieter is better, not when it comes to dynamics the bigger the range the better: Do you remember where you saw the info about the -10 to -30 dB dynamic range?Ĭlick to expand.First dynamics is mentioned on Benchmark’s site, they mask the bad side of this with glossing it as a positive in ultra low noise and accuracy. I haven’t seen anything about them using Class D either. It sounds like you agree that dynamics aren’t this amp’s best attribute, is that right? However, that’s not what I’m looking for with this system. Seems like the amp, DAC and speakers are fit for the job, but possibly not a fit for each other. I’m aiming for a very clean and neutral presentation with this system, essentially the opposite of my other system. I replaced a Peachtree Nova 300 running as a power amp, fwiw. As mentioned previously, I thought the amp sounded great with the LS50s. I bought the amp and speakers in the same transaction, and the speakers were the part of the purchase I was less sure about. Clearly others here agree - opinions I respect. I feel like I’ve read the entire internet about the AHB2 and this is honestly the first I’ve heard about it’s lack of dynamics. I’m interested in why you chose the LS50s over the SCM 11. Try to see if you can demo a different amp, hopefully a local dealer will let you borrow one. The combo sounded very sterile, the Wilson’s are now matched with a Macintosh tube amp, sound great, dynamic at reasonable volumes and being less then 10 feet away. I recently was pushed hard to match benchmark with my Wilson tunetot’s that are in my nyc space. Specially listening up close you need and amp that produces dynamics at reasonable volumes not extreme volumes and power. I understand they are an “H” amp which they claim combines class AB with D, which I find them sounding better then class D but more like a sterile class AB. Very detailed, perfect black background but no emotion or macro dynamics, great micro dynamics. I’ve also listen to Benchmark amps on three occasions now, my local hifi store loves pushing them, I personally found them to be anything but “dynamic”. I heard the original version of the ATC SCM 11, great speakers, I wound up buying the LS50 anniversary edition instead but I remember 11’s as being dynamic. The ATCs don't sound bad by any means, they just don't deliver the dynamics I'm used to hearing. Maybe it's just a case of my ears being used to a different sound signature. This setup produced an unlistenable amount of hiss with the Fortes. They sounded better when I used the Rogue Cronus Magnum III as a preamp driving a Peachtree Nova 300 as a power amp, but I got a fair amount of hiss with that setup. I also tried the ATCs in my main system (details in profile) and they sounded uninspiring compared to Forte IIIs, which are very dynamic and "front row". In case it's helpful: I used this same setup with original LS50s in place of the ATCs and I enjoyed the sound. The Benchmark is rated for 100WPC and is believed to have more "real world" power. I'm listening at low levels - 55 to 60 DB. I've read that ATC speakers are unforgiving of partnering equipment, but I don't believe the RME/Benchmark combo to be poor quality. Depending on my seating position, my ears are on axis with the tweeter, or slightly above them. It is toed in to match the listening angle of the right speaker. The left speaker is 12" farther from my head than the right speaker. It is coupled to the speaker stand with four dots of BluTack. The left speaker is on a speaker stand next to the desk, corner loaded by the same wall and the side of a bookcase. The right speaker is resting on my desk to the right of a large monitor, effectively corner loaded by a wall behind the monitor and books on a bookcase. I'm auditioning some new gear for my office/desk system, and I'm interested in some advice from people familiar with ATC speakers.ĪQ Type 4 10' (the older version with braided covers)
